What are the benefits of wall insulation?

Insulating your walls can prevent cold drafts, increase efficiency by lowering energy costs, and make your home quieter. It's also a great way to conserve energy. Insulation can help lower your monthly bills by up to 15 percent or more, which means the money you save on heating -- over time -- will help pay for the cost of insulation installation. So regardless of how tight things are this winter, insulate now and you'll save all year long! In this article, you'll read about wall insulation and the benefits of wall insulation for your home. While wall insulation is relatively easy to install, there are a few considerations before you begin.

Learn more about wall insulation below!

In cold climates -- if you live in a cold climate or plan to build a house in a colder one -- wall insulation is really important. Walls that don't have proper wall insulation will allow heat loss through convection and conduction all year long. Luckily, it's an extremely inexpensive material to have installed throughout the home during construction if it wasn't included as part of the original plans. In warmer climates, wall insulation still plays a role as well as energy efficiency for those on high-energy bills or those looking to put money back in their pockets.

In addition to wall insulation, there are many other great wall materials that can be used on your wall surfaces from wallpapers, wall murals, and wall paints. Wallpaper for a baby's room is often a way to add some zest while wall murals can be painted directly on the wall or simply hung up over the existing walls. There are many styles including retro wallpapers if you're looking for some new designs! Make sure you check out our articles on painting techniques and wallpapering tips .

How does wall insulation work?

Wall insulation works by limiting the amount of heat that escapes from a home. Insulation also reduces the amount of heat transferred through a wall to make it more comfortable inside. The best types of insulation are those which resist air transfer, but panels or other methods will suffice as well as long as they drape over studs and protrude past them at least 1 inch on the outside. Dense foam insulation is the most useful type for this purpose .

When wall insulation is installed, it goes between wall studs. The insulation can be wrapped around the wall or hung over them after being attached to furring strips. When the wall is finished with drywall or other wall coverings, the insulation should be trimmed to fit smoothly against the wall without reducing its effectiveness by more than 1/2 inch. Extra material can always be removed later if desired.

Wall insulation does not eliminate heat transfer completely, but it reduces both conduction and convection in wall construction enough to keep homes comfortable through all seasons of the year while lowering heating bills in winter months. It also helps solidify walls so that they do not rattle when people walk nearby. The materials used for wall insulation vary depending on preference, but are always dense enough to repel air.
